Does Your Medication Make You Fall?
Among older Americans, deaths from falls are up sharply, dovetailing with a surge in use of medications that increase the risk of falling, researchers say.
Two years ago Rachel fell and broke her hip. This was an unfortunate accident that had nothing to do with medication.
Four day in the hospital, including surgery. Five months of PT. Total charges $85,000.
Rachel was Medicare eligible but she was still working and elected coverage under her group insurance plan.
With Medicare and Medigap plan G her out of pocket would have been less than $200. Her group plan paid the bulk of her charges but we still owed over $5,000.
Two decades ago, about 57% of U.S. seniors took medications that increased their risk of falls. By 2017, that number had risen to 94%, and deaths caused by falls had more than doubled, a new study found.

The “pandemic” brought about many changes, not all of them were good. But some folks, mostly women, discovered there is nothing wrong with the color silver. Rachel was one of them.
I like the Silver Fox look.
She also retired . . .
Others who remained in the workforce had decisions to make. To dye or not to dye. That is the question.
Qualified plan money (IRA, 401k, 403b) can’t stay sheltered from taxes forever. The tax man cometh . . .
Her family called her “Ree”. Aretha Louise Franklin (March 25, 1942 – August 16, 2018) was an American singer, songwriter, actress, pianist, and civil rights activist.
Carole King wrote “(You Make Me Feel Like) a Natural Woman” for her. Otis Redding wrote and recorded “RESPECT” but Aretha Franklin took it and made it her own.

Boniva (brand) is over $450 with many Medicare Part D plans.
Ibandronate (generic Boniva) less than $40 with GoodRx
Better Than Restaurant Shrimp Scampi
Brine the shrimp briefly with baking soda and salt, a trick we use from time to time here on Serious Eats to ensure incredibly plump shrimp, but in this recipe I also cut the shrimp into two pieces, since I find whole large shrimp don't interact with the noodles all that well. Just a little smaller, though, and they can work their way into the pasta strands better, not just ride on top of them.
Saute the shrimp in dry vermouth rather than white wine. Unlike regular wine, vermouth is fortified and will last for months.
Most folks have never heard of a Medicare Select plan.
Based on a conversation with a lady a few weeks ago, my guess is there are some agents who are likewise misinformed.
If you don’t care which hospitals accept your plan, then a Select plan might be right for you.
That’s all folks!
